Bioactive Potential of Amla Extract for Cellular Protection and Skin Vitality*

RELATED ARTICLES

Amla extract, commonly known as Indian gooseberry, is considered one of the best rejuvenating herbs in Ayurvedic tradition. Traditionally, ascorbic acid has been used as the standard biomarker for amla extract in dietary supplements. However, recent research has shown that amla contains inconsistent levels of ascorbic acid, sometimes only in trace amounts. We use an authenticated Amla extract standardized with β-glucogallin—a potent antioxidant shown to be more effective than ascorbic acid.

Testing on our amla extract ingredient found broad-spectrum antioxidant activity, with a high combined ORAC value, attributed to its water-soluble phytonutrients, hydrolysable tannins, and super scavenging action comparable to the enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD). Other antioxidant potential activities of the amla extract include lipid peroxidation and LDL oxidation inhibition, which support cardiovascular and overall wellness. Amla tannins from the water extract of amla are reported to be more effective than quercetin in inhibiting aldose reductase, relieving oxidative stress, and supporting diabetic complication management.
